"Steelers drop season opener to Jaguars"

Pittsburgh prepared for heat and got rain in their preseason opener at Jacksonville on Sunday. That wasn't the only thing that went wrong for the Steelers, though - not by a longshot.

Jacksonville scored three times in a nine-minute span during the second quarter to win their sixth-straight opening day contest, 21-3, over Pittsburgh.

While Steelers Coach Bill Cowher is just getting over his nightmares of Jacksonville RB Fred Taylor racking up 234 rushing yards and four touchdowns in Three Rivers Stadium last season, he will now have lingering images of WR Jimmy Smith troubling his sleep.

Smith caught eight passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns despite Pittsburgh players keying on the Jacksonville vet all game long. He blew by CB Dewayne Washington for the first scoring catch and found a seem in the middle of the endzone for the second touchdown.

TE Damon Jones caught the other touchdown pass from QB Mark Brunell and the rest was left up to the Jacksonville defense.

The Steelers had several scoring chances but could not seem to piece together sustained drives after the scoreless first quarter and could not convert big third- and fourth-down plays. Overall, the Steelers were 6-for-16 on third down and one-for-three on fourth down.

Steelers QB Kordell Stewart completed 21 of 37 passes on the day for 181 yards with three sacks and two interceptions. Brunell, meanwhile, was 15-for-26 for 198 yards, one sack for minimal loss by DE Aaron Smith, and three touchdowns.

All the scoring in the game came in the second period, which started with a 41-yard Kris Brown field goal to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 league.

Pittsburgh did out-rush the Jaguars, 120-101, and control the clock for 31:10 in the game, but after Jones' catch, the damage was done. Rain began to pour just before the half and didn't let up until the fourth quarter, making for a sloppy second half dominated by the aggressive defenses of both teams.

The Steelers fumbled the ball five times, losing two of them for four total turnovers. The Jaguars fumbled twice but recovered both. The second fumble actually turned into a big gain for Jacksonville as rookie safety James Boyd, out of Penn State, returned a fumbled kickoff inside the Steelers' 10-yard line. K Mike Hollis missed the ensuing chip-shot field goal for Jacksonville.

The first Jacksonville fumble by punter Chris Hanson left the Steelers with a scoring opportunity, but Stewart fumbled the exchange on a resulting first and goal and the Steelers were kept off the board.

Offensively, Amos Zereoue led the Pittsburgh rushers with 58 yards on eight carries and Hines Ward caught six passes for 74 yards but fumbled once. Jacksonville RB Fred Taylor finished with 96 rushing yards after two long runs while wasting the clock late in the game.

Injuries played a big role in the Steelers' struggles. K Josh Miller (leg), DE Kimo von Oelhoffen (ankle) and LB Kendrell Bell (ankle) all left the game in the first quarter. WR Plaxico Burress (shoulder) joined them on the sidelines in the second half.

With Miller on the sidelines after Donovan Darius leveled him during a partial punt block, Brown was left to do the remainder of the punting. He fumbled the first Mike Schneck snap but got off the kick, then came on for two more decent efforts.
Next Sunday, the Steelers (0-1) open Heinz Stadium for real, welcoming the Cleveland Browns (0-1) to Pittsburgh. The Jaguars (1-0) travel to Chicago (0-1) to take on the Bears.

Game Notes
Jags WR Jimmy Smith caught eight

times while passing for 181 yards.

Four Steelers starters were
knocked out of the game
with injuries: K Josh Miller,
