PITTSBURGH (June 1, 2001) — The Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday waived running back Richard Huntley and safety Scott Shields.

Huntley rushed for 215 yards on 46 carries and three touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 91 yards as a backup to Jerome Bettis last season. He rushed for a career-best 567 yards in 1999.

The Steelers recently signed veteran running back Ron Rivers to fill the role of backup to Bettis.

Shields, a second-round pick in 1999, has been a disappointment. The Steelers envisioned the 6-foot-4, 228-pounder as a physical free safety, but he failed to win a starting job and struggled in the nickel and dime packages.
